A better understanding of the contemporary sphere of diabetes mellitus may be aided by a historical summary. The study of both the remote and recent literature requires substantial knowledge of medicine and the basic sciences underlying the pathology of the disease. The historical perspective of diabetes mellitus guides us in a better understanding the disease and the care of patients.
